Respiratory System: This system is composed of tissues and organs that allow us to breathe.
Function: The respiratory system allows for gas exchange. It allows oxygen to enter the lungs as well as carbon dioxide to exit. The respiratory system also helps transport gases through the body and back to the lungs.

The Nose: This is a structure on the face. The nose has two nostrils, which allow air to enter. The air then travels to the pharynx. This airway also allows for carbon dioxide (a wasteful gas) to exit the body. The nose helps wet and warm the air, because otherwise your lungs would become irritated.
The Mouth: This is another structure on the face. It is an airway and therefore has the same function as the nose.
The Pharynx (throat): This connects the nose to the larynx.
The Larynx (voice box): This connects the pharynx to the trachea.
The Trachea (windpipe): This connects the larynx to the bronchus. The trachea splits into two bronchial tubes that enter your lungs.
The Bronchi: These are the tubes that the trachea splits into. The bronchi enter the lungs and branch into thousands of smaller tubes called the bronchioles.

The Bronchioles: Air travels through these tubes until they reach the alveoli. This is made up of smooth muscle.
The Alveoli: This is the air sac in the lung. The gas exchange takes place here. The alveoli is located at the end of the bronchioles.
The Lungs: There are a right and a left lung. This is the main organ involved with respiration. The lungs are divided into five main sections called the lobes. The lungs are responsible for delivering oxygen to the body and removing carbon dioxide.
